What To Expect With Hemorrhoid Surgery?

Although there are many solutions to treating hemorrhoids aside from surgery, sometimes the problem is simply too severe to treat without surgery. Nobody prefers to go into surgery, but it is something that you may have to face. Because of this, it is important you understand what to expect with hemorrhoid surgery.

Hemorrhoidectomy is the name for hemorrhoid surgery to remove the problem. Prior to the surgery, you will be given general anesthesia so that you will not feel the pain whatsoever during the procedure.

As the procedure begins, incisions are made in the tissue around the hemorrhoid. The swollen vein that is inside the hemorrhoid is tied off to prevent bleeding. From there, the hemorrhoid is removed and the surgical area is either sewn closed or left open. The actual surgery is done with either a scalpel, a tool that uses electricity, or a laser.

Prior to the hemorrhoid surgery, you are given a long-acting local anesthetic. It will last between 6 to 12 hours long to help provide you with pain relief after the surgery. A majority of the time you are treated as an outpatient and will leave the hospital the same day of the surgery. If this is the case, you will leave the hospital as soon as the anesthesia wears off and you have urinated.

Following the surgery, you can expect some pain and discomfort. You will generally be given some prescription medication to take and you may want to ask for additional over-the-counter medicines that you can take.

It is normal to be on alert and cautious following your surgery. It is perfectly normal for some bleeding to occur, especially with the first bowel movement following the surgery. If you are experiencing a lot of pain before and after bowel movements, you can apply numbing medicines.

As for relieving the constant pain you experience, ice packs are recommended to reduce the pain and swelling around your anal area. In addition, frequent soaks in warm baths can help reduce the pain and muscle spasms.

You will be expected to make follow-up exams with the surgeon generally 1 to 3 weeks following the surgery. This is solely to make sure you are recovering properly and that there are no problems.

Hemorrhoid surgery is not the first option you want to consider, but it may be your last option when it comes to treating this problem. It is a fairly common procedure that will have you in and out of the hospital the same day. While you may experience some pain and discomfort following the surgery, it is well worth it in the long run. Learn more about hemorrhoid surgery and other treatment options here!
